What Is an Independent Medical Examination?

An Independent Medical Examination is a medical evaluation arranged by an employer, insurer, or another party to assess a worker’s injury, diagnosis, treatment, or ability to work. A physician who is not the worker’s treating provider conducts the examination and prepares findings for use in a workers’ compensation claim or dispute.

How Independent Medical Examination Works

An Independent Medical Examination begins when an employer, insurer, or other claim participant asks a physician to review a worker’s condition. The physician examines the worker, considers relevant medical information, and may ask about the workplace event, symptoms, treatment, and work history. The physician then prepares a written opinion.

The report may address whether the reported condition relates to the workplace event, whether treatment appears connected to the condition, and whether the worker can perform job duties. The examination physician does not take over the worker’s treatment. The report becomes part of the claim record and may be considered during benefit decisions, settlement discussions, or a dispute.

From the Atlanta Auto Law team

When we review an Independent Medical Examination, we compare its opinions with the worker’s medical records, treatment history, and account of the workplace event. We also check whether the report addresses the questions that affect medical benefits, work restrictions, and the claim’s disputed issues.

Independent Medical Examination in Practice: A Real-World Example

A warehouse employee develops back pain after lifting equipment at work. An Independent Medical Examination physician reviews the treatment records and examines the employee, then gives an opinion about the condition’s connection to the work event and the employee’s ability to perform the job.
